Mik and Donna start boiling maple syrup for the first time
Donna's been making Kombucha like crazy, and one day in March she suggested we try boiling sap from our backyard maple trees. I shouted YES!
We immediately drove to a farmer in Deerfield who had advertised buckets on Craigslist, and bought six sap buckets, covers and taps for $45 (a steal!), drilled six holes into five trees, and began collecting sap!
Initially it was slow-going, with very little sap flowing, but eventually we were collecting about 3 gallons a day.
Two weeks after we started we had our first batch. A little over a quart. The next day we made Belgium waffles with sausage and scrambled eggs, and our freshly made homemade syrup. Yum!
